I think what the kids are trying to say is:
1 you can split after the Directv box, with a splitter from radio shack. But you can only watch the same channel as the main tv.
2 You need a second wire in from the satellite to tune to a different receiver. So if you already have a second wire, you can buy a used receiver! Just make sure you are not 'buying' a unit that was only rented by the seller!
