Video Extender: Economical Means of Long Distance Video Transmission over Cat5/Cat6 UTP Cables

Video Extender enables you to extend video between the source and the output devices over long distances. These devices use standard Cat5 / Cat5e / Cat6 UTP cables to send video between the local transmitting unit and the remote receiving unit. Since these Video Extenders use Cat5/Cat6 cables thus eliminating the need for long bulky VGA cables. These Cat5 Extender units transmit Video locally as well as remotely to one or multiple screens.

Amongst the various types of video extender units, the most common is the VGA Extender. These extenders are available with 1/2/4/8 ports and with optional stereo audio or RS232 control. VGA Extenders are easy to install and support simple plug and play functionality. These Cat5 Extender units provide sharp and clear images with resolutions of up to 1900 x 1200. They provide equalization and video signal gain adjustment. While VGA extenders are the most popular, video extenders are also available in other formats as well, including, DVI extender, HDMI extender, Composite extender, and Component extender.

KVM Extender allows the keyboard, mouse and monitor to be placed up to 1000 feet away from a computer. They transmit data and high-resolution video up to 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz. These Cat5 extenders are compatible with DOS, Windows (3x, 9x, 2000, NT, ME, XP), Novell, Linux, UNIX, HP UNIX, QNX, SGI, FreeBSD, BeOS and Open VMS. KVM Extenders have a dual user option which enables two users to access the same computer. This feature is ideal for either remote desktop applications or for controlling a single PC from more than one location. Dual User access allows the main system to be placed in a secure environment.

USB Extender allows extension of 1 to 4 USB peripheral devices up to 150 feet via Cat5 / Cat5e / Cat6 UTP cable. These extender units break the 15 feet USB extension limitation. Cat5 USB Extenders support simple plug and play functionality and do not require device drivers. Icron Ranger USB 2.0 Extender via Cat5 is a latest addition to the family of USB Extender
applications. It supports USB 2.0 peripheral devices at speeds up to 480 Mb/s over a distance of 100 m/330 ft. These extenders are powered by patented ExtremeUSB technology. Icron USB 2.0 Extender units are also available for extensions over single or multimode fiber optic cables.

Video extenders are recommended for Digital Signage installations where the video inputs need to be sent to multiple remote output devices. They are also used in military applications as well as in commercial, industrial, financial arenas and in public broadcasting.

Can electric wirings beside UTP Cat5e cable affect the UTP cable's performance?

We've installed a UTP cable Cat5e beside the electrical wirings. Some says it's not good because it will affect other users connected in the hub.

It can affect the performance, although I've never seen or experienced any noticable degradation of signal strength. I frequently have long runs of Cat 5e running right next to large bundles of power cables (temporary networks setup during meetings and conventions) and have never had issues.

The only time I would be overly concerned about it would be if I was installing a network that needed to be certified. For home use, you'll be fine.
If cost isn't an issue and there is no way to avoid running it next to electrical cables, use shielded Cat 5e.
