I want to safely install USB female ports to my motorcycle.?

I want to add USB female ports to my motorcycle. I want to be able to charge small electronic devises(MP3 and Cell phone). How would I go about doing this with out causing damage to motocycle or components?

It depends really on what type of motorcycle it is, some bikes have 6 volt batteries, some have 12 volt batteries and some don't have batteries at all but just have a set of small coils to directly power the ignition system & lights only when the engine is spinning.

If your bike has a 12volt system then you may be able to find a USB charger designed to work from a Car cigar lighter socket and adapt it accordingly. You may have quite some difficulty finding an existing USB charger designed to run from 6 volts.

If you can't adapt an existing device then I guess you'll have to search around for suitable circuit diagrams in order to construct a device from scratch. Basically all you need is a regulated 5 volt DC power supply with sufficient current output (typically 500 milliamps (half an amp) per device) wired to the correct terminals of your female sockets which will obviously have to be mounted in a suitable location or on a custom made panel (up by handlebars somewhere) ...

Whichever route you go, remember to pay special attention to ensuring that any circuit/device that you attach to your battery/DC circuit is adequately protected with the right rating of fuse (an in-line fuse holder for a quick-blow glass fuse connected straight to the battery should suffice) ... also ensure that the USB sockets are adequately protected against any ingress of water from both sides to prevent short circuits and damage/fire to your USB charging circuit.
