How does Tmobile Hotspot work and do I need to have a wifi compatible phone to use it?

I was at Starbucks this morning and didn't know how to use the HotSpot network, eventhough I have signed up for it yesterday. A 611 call to a rep at Tmobile and I was told that my Nokia phone I am currently using is not wifi compatible and thus, I can't get on the internet. I told her that I am using a laptop and it has a wireless adapter card and why do I need a phone to browse the web. Why could I not just use the laptop like at The Coffee Bean for this purpose? She kept telling me I need a wifi phone. I am stumped and feel useless. What the heck is HotSpot good for if you need a combination of a wifi phone and a wifi laptop?

Your phone will only need to be wifi compatible if you want to use the Hotspot to go online with your phone. A Hotspot is just a wireless access point; your phone would access it just like a laptop computer accesses a wifi access point.

You should definitely be able to use your laptop with no problem.

If this is a T-Mobile HotSpot, then it should present you with a sign-on screen the first time you use it; your user name is your phone number, and your initial password will be the last four digits of your social security number (or of the social security number of the person who "owns" the account). Once you sign in with your phone number and the last four of your SSN, then it should prompt you to choose a password. After that, you'll use your phone number and the password you gave it to sign in.

You don't need to have a phone AND a laptop; you can use either one (or both, of course). The HotSpots are just wifi access points that T-Mobile happens to own and/or run. Your laptop should definitely be able to access the Hotspot; you don't have to have a wifi-capable phone if you don't want to use the phone to access the internet via a Hotspot or other wireless access point like a router in your home.

I used to do tech support for T-Mobile, and I know that a lot of their techs don't really get the difference between wifi access of the internet and cellular access; T-Mobile's tech support can be very compartmentalized, unfortunately, despite their best efforts to help. Unfortunately, that also means that they don't always know how to EXPLAIN the difference to callers, even though that difference is crucial.

Initially, on your laptop, you'll have to go to Start and then Connection Manager or Connect To (depending on what version of Windows you're running). You'll see an option to select a network to connect to; at that point, you'll select the network you want (you may see several - there are LOTS of wireless routers out there these days) and tell it to connect. At that point, as I mentioned above, it should give you a screen that will ask for your user name and password, and you can sign in.
