Entrepreneurs Reminded of Need for Disaster Recovery Plan
Budding business entrepreneurs of the present and the future have been reminded of the importance of having a tried and tested disaster recover plan in place for their business.
According to London Chamber of Commerce (LCC) figures reported by the British Computer Society (BCS), 90 per cent of businesses that lose data as a result of a disaster are forced to close within two years, suggesting planning for such events is crucial to the longevity of an organisation.
"Putting in place a tested business continuity plan is extremely important for all businesses, particularly SMBs [small and medium-sized businesses], as they rarely have the reserves necessary to pick the business up after a disaster," said Steve Murphy, UK managing director of Hitachi Data Systems.
Mr Murphy added that this process involves daily and weekly back-ups of data, as well as dealing with problems based on importance when beginning recovery following a disaster.
The BCS-published LCC data also showed that half of those companies that experienced a computer outage were forced to close within five years, with 43 per cent of companies that experienced a disaster never able to recover.
Mr Murphy added that data backup is an area that small businesses "can't afford not to invest in", suggesting that the nation's budding entrepreneurs should make sure all their computer data is disaster proof if they want to stick around.
According to the Eastern Daily Press, Business Link found that women starting a business are more likely to seek advice than their male counterparts, suggesting that they could well take on board the disaster recovery advice.
