Understanding Simplex and Duplex fibers
Understanding Simplex and Duplex fibers Networks, channels or interfaces using optic fibers can be classified into Duplex, Simplex or multiple, based on the mode of operation. As the name implies, Simplex refers to a single fiber, Duplex to two fibers and multiple to multiple fibers, but there's a lot more to Simplex and Duplex fibers.
A cable is considered Simplex if only a single fiber is present inside a single core and is covered by a single jacket. On the other hand, Duplex fibers work like two individual simplex cables joined by a single jacket. Both Simplex and Duplex fibers are available in singlemode and multimode and are easy to install and handle.
Simplex fibers communicate in a single direction. For example, a communication network using Simplex operation either sends or receives data while that using Duplex operation is capable of communicating in both directions, i.e., sending and receiving data. Duplex operation is possible only between two devices. Duplex operations can also be half Duplex, where communication is possible only in one direction at a time although the two devices involved can communicate in both directions. Duplex operation is usually required in workstations, servers, and fiber switches, and modems.
