Sometimes when you have a cellphone that you really wish to keep and know exactly how to use it, and you have to consider selling it or buy another one only because you do not want to stay with the same cellphone provider. In such cases, all you need is an unlock code which will allow you to unlock your cellphone to use your any service provider, or SIM card. Usually many cell phone service providers lock the cell phones for competitive purposes, so that you can not use the cell phone with the other service provider.
Basically there are two ways to unlock the cell phone devices. Often times all you have to do is just enter a code into your cell phone and get it unlocked. This is a unique code for your cellphone and is linked with the serial number designated to that specific cell phone. Generally you can easily purchase this code for as low as $5. When you enter that code into your cell phone it will be unlocked. Then you can travel overseas and switch cell phone service providers accordingly.
Other phones require you to unlock service or the operating system. Technically the operating system just has to be reprogrammed in order to sneeze the lock. In case you have this kind of cell phone, you will require a data cable to connect the phone to the programming unit. This method costs you a lot more money, but if you like your cell phone and do not wish to get rid of it, this method is worth it. There are many affordable data cables available online.
Cell phones or I'd rather call them smart phone these days, for example Blackberry or Treo are an investment. It certainly makes sense that no one wish to get rid of it easily and so, unlock it to use any service providers. And in case you have a cellphone that you consider dispensable, you may wish to simply get a new cellphone if you do not want to spend more than $5 just to unlock it.
After you have successfully unlocked your cellphone you will usually receive some sort of notification that says the phone has been unlocked successfully or you may just notice that the cellphone does not display the name of the old service provider. If either one happens, it clearly means that you now can choose any other service provider.
Just to note, when you subscribe with a new service provider, you should ask whether or not the cellphone will be locked again, as that is an unavoidable possibility. This is not necessarily a bad remark, but you should realize whether or not the cellphone is unlocked so that you can even switch the new service provider at any time and even use different GSM or SIM cards.

I want to unlock my SIM card so it would work with any phone. How should i go about doing that?
I thought it was the other way around, that phones had to be unlocked to work with any SIM card. I was under the impression that you could take any SIM card and put it in an unlocked phone and it would work. Have they changed things?
