I bought this router due to being a tech junkie, and the desire to have a router that can transfer files to my home server via my laptop at lightning speed. Netgear WNDR4000 is a part of the first bunch of WiFi routers to support 3-dimensional (data) streams (max 450 Mbps bandwidth) at 5 GHz band. I would say that the router provides a solid connection (no dropouts .... yet .. my old Linksys WRT610N had this problem), slightly higher throughput for file transfers so my Netgear WNDR3700 at 5 GHz band, easy to setup and great parental control feature. 

The negative side of the router is that the 2.4 GHz band has only 2 spatial streams to a maximum data link rate of 300 Mbps. Compare the throughput of the 5 GHz band between WNDR3700 WNDR4000 and showed only a 15% gain instead of the expected 50% gain (300 Mbps vs. 450 Mbps). 

I also have Cisco E4200, a second router with 3 spatial streams at 5 GHz, I try and I would say that it has the same throughput performance as WNDR4000, better setup utility, and no so great parental controls. 

Setup:

Inside WNDR4000 box, you get the router, power adapter, Ethernet cable, resource CD (documents and "Smart Wizard" application.) Configuring the router is easy, just plug in the power adapter, Ethernet cable to your computer and configure the router. 

You have two approaches to configure the router, the classic web interface for people with experience or "Smart Wizard" for people who want an easy approach without getting lost in the details. Web interface for the router setup is the same as the previous model WNDR3700, so it was a breeze to do. Just setup the wireless security, the ports for my network devices, and I was ready to go. My PS3, volcanic, and Windows Home Server had no problems working with the router. 

Use of "Smart Guide" program only allows you to put your wireless SSID and security password. For child safety, give the Netgear a separate utility operated by a company called OpenDNS. It allows you to block up to 57 different website categories at different times of day. 

Setup Utility (Cisco Connect) to Cisco Router E4200 is slightly better than the Netgear utility. Cisco Connect allows you to configure several functions, such as visiting network, upgrading router firmware, configuration, etc. The key is parental control, you must manually input the site you want to block 

Performance: 

Want to know if I made the right move in buying the router, I measured the throughput of the 5 GHz band WNDR3700, WNDR4000 and E4200 router. I used the tool "LAN Speed ​​Test" to measure the movement of the laptop in one room of the router to my server on the router's gigabit port. My laptop has Intel 6300 wifi card that supports 3 data stream. The WNDR3700 showed 115 Mbps up and 128 Mbps down WNDR4000 is 134 Mbps up to 140 Mbps down and E4200 showed 129 Mbps up and 148 Mbps down. As you can see from the numbers, the WNDR4000 is around 15% faster than the WNDR3700. At 2.4 GHz band, all routers around the same speed, 60 Mbps up to 70 Mbps down.

Summary: 

All in all I am happy with the router. But I'm docking one star from the rating for the router only delivers 2 stream (not 3) for 2.4 GHz band (not sure why they did it, I hope it is not some standard) and for only the small 15% speed increase over the WNDR3700. As these routers just came out, I guess we'll have to wait to see how robust they are (hardware life and firmware issues).

As at 28 March 2011, the last three wireless router from Netgear is: 

WNDR3700v2 aka WNDR37AV - Dual Band Gigabit Router with 300 Mbps max of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band. 

WNDR3800 - Similar to WNDR37AV, but with the following functions: print server status, Clear Channel Selector and Quick Start, Steady Stream HD. 

WNDR4000 - Dual Band Gigabit Router with 300 Mbps max of 2.4 GHz and 450 Mbps max of 5 GHz band. It does not have the extra features on the WNDR3800. 

All these routers have a 680 MHz MIPS 32-bit processor, 64 MB RAM, and are based on 802.11n final version.

will buying a better wireless router for my living room increase speeds for my bedroom?

the router i have is wireless G which offers 1x speed and coverage, will buying a range max router which offers 15x speed and coverage increase internet speeds for my room, i get about a 65%-85% signal in my room from the living room.

If you are after speed, then getting a better router such as the G or N networks can and will speed the transfer times.

If it is a signal issue, I would recommend gettin a "repeater" which boosts your wireless signal for a very strong and fast coverage which saves you the money of getting a new router, plus it boosts your signal all around the house.
