From what I know a point to point system is less expensive but that is all I know.
An airline 'hub' is a designated (generally permanent) base of operations for a specific airlines arrivals and departures, and use them to funnel passengers and freight as efficiently as possible. Larger airlines usually operate a number of these 'hubs' throughout their systems.
For example:
Continental Airlines operates hubs in it's hometown of Houston, Texas (IAH), Cleveland, Ohio (CLE), Newark, New Jersey (EWR) and in Guam (GUM).
Virtually all of Continental's flights transit one or more of these hubs to get you to your final destination.
Point-to-point is primarily used by smaller carriers, however, Southwest Airlines used this system for years to build their empire. While they too operate a hub and spoke system, they still use the point-to-point quite wisely. Point-to-point is simply that. Much like a Greyhound bus, some of their flights will start, say in Phoenix, on their way to Dallas, yet make 4-5 stops along the way.
