Patch Cords And Cable Management
The patch cable or patch cord is definitely an electrical or optical cable used to connect ("patch-in") one electronic or optical device to another for signal routing. Devices of differing kinds (i.e., a switch connected to a computer, or a switch to a router) are then attached with patch cords. Patch cords usually are produced in many different colors in order for being clearly noticeable, and also are relatively short, conceivably no longer than two meters. Varieties of patch cords include microphone cables, headphone extension cables, XLR connector, Tiny Telephone (TT) connector, RCA connector and now ¼" TRS connector cables (in addition to modular Ethernet cables), and thicker, hose-like cords (snake cable) used to handle video or amplified signals. Patch cords can be made from coaxial cables, with a positive or "hot" signal carried throughout a shielded core, as well as a negative electrical ground or earthed return connection carried throughout a wire mesh surrounding the core. Each end of the cable is fixed using a connector so as to insure the cord is plugged in. Connector variations may vary widely, mainly with adapting cables. Patch cords can be:
Single-conductor wires using, for example, banana connectors Coaxial cables utilizing, for example, BNC connectors Twisted pair Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 cables using 89pc (RJ-45) modular connectors with T568A or T568B wiring Fiber Optic Cables. A really short patch cable could possibly be referred to as a pigtail. These might be used, for example, to attach a wall-mounted telephone to the actual wall plate itself. Typically, products like cable trays, cable ladders, and cable baskets are used to support a cable through cabling routes. The IT industry has unique needs because, different from heavy power cables, data cables regularly need to be added, moved, or removed many times throughout the life of the installation. It is customary practice to install "fixed cables" between cabling closets or cabinets. These cables are enclosed in cable trays etc, and are also terminated at each end onto patch panels within communications cabinet or outlets at the desktop. The circuits are then interconnected to the final location using patch cords. The difficulty is that these patch leads are installed, removed and reinstalled often during the life of the installation.

i have a time warner internet service and am adding another pc with a westell versalink mod:327w wireles modem?
the internet service i have coming into my house is timewarner and looks like a cable to a television. do i have to get some kind of adapter that changes it to a phone type of male plug? the routers DSL jack is small like a phone jack. do they even make such a pigtail? And should i hook the timewarner Modem and the router in a series? or just use the router only and adapt that fat tv cable Internet cable to just the wireless router and go from there? i called timewarner tech support. the lady told me it can be done. BUT they don't support any third party routers and she could send one of there technicians out to do it but they would have to charge me. thanx for any kind of help at all
The cable should plug into a cable modem that you get from Time Warner. From there the signal is passed along to your TV and phone jack. On this box is an Ethernet port where you connect your computer to access the internet. You can connect one PC directly to this Ethernet port. If you want to share the internet connection amongst more than one PC you will need to connect a router to the cable modem and then connect your PC's to the router. Hope this makes sense.
