Versions of PCMCIA Card
PCMCIA Card was designed by the PCMCIA which is an acronym for Personal Computer Memory Card International Association. Owing to the difficulty expressed by people in pronouncing the acronym, it was dubbed "people can't memorize computer industry." For marketing reasons and easier pronunciation, the name PC card was used in place of PCMCIA Card. The right to use PC card was gotten from IBM. The version 2 of PCMCIA card became known as PC card.
This version of PCMCIA card is designed to be used for many functions in notebook personal computers, for modems and networks. Another version of PCMCIA card is known as CardBus. This is a 32-bit version of PC card standard. This version of PCMCIA card does not only support 32 bits which is a wider bus than the 16 bits, it is also designed to support the mastering of bus and the speeding up of 33 MHz.
The package of all PCMCIA card devices is similar and they are of same size with credit card. The length of the size is 85.6 mm while the width is 54.0mm. PCMCIA card are of different types. The type I is the initial standard which has a 16-bit interface. It has a thickness of 3.3mm. They can be used in such memory devices as RAM, OTP, flash memory and SRAM cards.
The type II can support 16-bit as well as 32 bit interface. They have a thickness of 5.0 mm. They are also designed to accommodate interfaces that are not built in the host computer. They can be used in such applications as TV cards and modem network. The type II of PCMCIA card is of different types. Each type has its own peculiarities.
Just like type II, the type III of PCMCIA card devices can support 16-bit and 32-bit also. Their thickness is 10.5 mm. Their thickness makes it possible for them to accommodate those components that cannot be accommodated by the earlier discussed types.
The last type of PC card devices was launched by Toshiba but it is yet to be sanctioned by the PCMCIA. The thickness of these PC card devices are 16 mm.
The later specification of PCMCIA Card is known as ExpressCard which is designed to replace PC Card. The thickness is 34mm and there is a PCMCIA adapter meant to help people used the ExpressCard.

Does my home network need an additional adapter?
I have a wireless router connected to my WinXP desktop PC via a CAT5 cable. One end inserted into the ethernet port, other end into the Line 1 port on the wireless router.
Also, I have a DSL modem. Another CAT5 cable inserted into the WAN port on the wireless router, other end into the Ethernet1 port on the DSL modem. I have an internet connection on my desktop PC.
I have a wireless PCMCIA adapter inserted into my WinME laptop so I can access the internet from my desktop, but it is not working. Do i need an ADDITIONAL wireless adapter in my PC to share the internet, or is my wireless router supposed to take the place of an adapter?
My DSL modem is a Westell D90, and my wireless router is a D-Link DI-524 802.11g, and the PCMCIA adapter in my laptop is a D-Link DWL-650 802.11b. I've been told both 802.11g and b are compatible.
Thank you in advance!
You should be able to connect direct to the router from your wireless card. Check that you have activated the wireless connection, that the drivers for the wireless card are loaded correctly and that it's tcp/ip properties are set to automatic. Then use the wireless utility for the card to search for your router, set the encryption key and connect.
