Boot Error 0xc0000098 After Installing Windows Vista SP 1

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) became available on Windows Update and Download Center for Windows Vista users on March 18, 2008. The update includes various substantial improvements in terms of performance, reliability, user's experience and support to various new hardware and standards. But at times, the deployment of the service pack via Windows Update can cause a machine to become unbootable. This forces you to attempt Windows repair using Windows Recovery Environment. But if you fail in your attempts, you might need to perform clean reinstallation of Windows Vista, which causes data loss. In such cases if your backup fails or is currently absent, you are suggested to use a powerful data recovery utility that could restore the data thus lost.

For an instance, consider that you use Windows Update to install Windows Vista SP 1 on your computer. The process appears to be completed as you see progress status showing 100% completion. But when you start the computer, it gives the below error message:

ntoskrnl.exe
Status: 0xc0000098
Info: Windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt.

After you receive this error message, you cannot boot the system and the process halts. It also prompts you to boot the system from Windows Vista installation disk to repair. Attempting to do so results failure as it says that it cannot repair and suggests you to send the report thus generated to Microsoft. This makes your data inaccessible.

Solution

Try these steps to solve the existing issue:

  • Boot your computer using Windows Vista installation disk. You might need to configure BIOS to boot from CD or DVD

  • Specify Language, Time, Currency and other options. Click Next

  • Click 'Repair your Computer' and select the target Windows installation

  • Choose 'Command Prompt' in 'System Recovery Options'

  • Restore hal.dll, ntkrnlpa.exe and ntoskrnl.exe files in your WindowsSystem32 folder

  • Restore acpi.sys , volmgr.sys, disk.sys, volsnap.sys, msisadrv.sys and pci.sys files in your WindowsSystem32Drivers folder

  • Exit the command prompt and restart the computer and check if the problem persists

  • If you still cannot boot the system, reinstall Windows and restore data from backup.

  • Use an efficient data recovery software in case of any backup concerns. Data Recovery applications are safe recovery products embedded with high-end algorithms to locate missing data. It is recommended to use these partition recovery products before trying to format or install anything on your computer.

HDD not recognize in XP even though show up through PCI SATA RAID card software?

i've just installed a HDD through SATA port in my old crappy computer . i installed the driver and everything and the software came with the card recognize the HDD but it doesnt seems like it's recognized in "my computer" . i dont know what to do now .

and , i want to install windows on it and use it instead of the old IDE HDD i have . i know that the card isnt bootable , but is there a way to even try ?

is there any benefit if i buy a IDE to SATA cable and install it ?
and last question : last month i messed around with my pc , completely took apart all the component in my pc and i reinstalled everything . it's working now but it boot up reallly sssllllloooow . i changed the other to boot the HDD first but it doesnt seems to change anything . is it because i messed up the IDE cable ? wrong installation ?

When you run into the “HDD Not Detected” error, first check the external hard drive interface data lines to see if there is deformation, whether the connection spot have been incorrectly soldered joint. After doing that, remove the hard drive back, the circuit panels appears. Unscrew the control panel fixed screws; separate the main control panel from hard disk. Then you can see two of rows spring on the hard disk. One row is the main electrical power supply, and the other row is the magnetic head mechanical arm drive coil power source and circuit control board interface between the data transmission.
