What junk should I have in my trunk?
To be prepared for whatever. So far I have in my late-model Malibu:
Jumper cables
12V tire inflator
Can of Fix-a-flat
Umbrella
Flashlight (tripod kind)
Ice scraper
Squeegee
Long-stem lighter (like for lighting a barbeque)
2 gallon gas can (empty)
Jug of washer fluid
Plenty of room left, though I do plan on getting an organizer. What else would the well-prepared road warrior have?
How about a first aid kit? Depending on your skills as a first aid provider you need at the minimum a blanket some bandages a tube of some antibiotic I like triple antibiotic and some cravats for making slings and if absolutely necessary to safe a life a tourniquet. Cravats can be used to make splints as well. I would also suggest tylenol or some other OTC pain relievers and that sort of thing. I was a medic in the Air Force so my kit is some what more extensive and includes hemostats and bandage scissors. The blanket I can use to treat for shock and if necessary I can make a litter out of it. Good first aid kits are available on the market but the best thing for this sort of question is not something you'd put in the trunk but in your head take some first aid classes and become proficient at rendering aid for at least minor injuries. Even the most rudimentary first aid can keep some one alive long enough for more well trained help to arrive.
