Network interface card(N.I.C)
maybe this is not foreign to the networker, but I wanted to give a littleknowledge I have with some people who still lay. because I believethat no matter how the science we have and communicated to others who do not know, so my knowledge will be beneficial and willcontinue to grow. especially in the knowledge that I share. NICabsolute existence in a local area network. if it does not exist, maybe there will be no local area network. although there is stillanother option, which is using wireless, but the LAN will be veryimportant presence in cable-based network.
NIC (network interface card) or usually called a LAN card is an additional interface card on a computer that has a function as modifiers electricity into digital data or opposite. if you want to connect multiple computers using a cable, then each computer must have a NIC as a gateway out of the entry of data in a local area network.
There are two types of NIC, onboard NIC and external NIC .
- onboard NIC , is the NIC that integrates with the mainboard and can not be separated.
- External NICs: an optional NIC is installed if the onboard NIC does not exist. External NICs installed in PCI slots, so you can add as many PCI slots are available.
the difference between onboard NIC and external NIC is just on the layout of this component. if the onboard NIC, located together with the mainboard / motherboard. but if the external NIC only if the NIConoard enhancement absent or not functioning. usually the externalNIC installed on PCI slot on the mainboard / motherboard of your computer.
with each other NIC you can connect with multiple computers and became a small-scale computer network called LAN (Local Area Network). in addition to the computer, you also can connect with a printer that can be used together, sharing files, even you can share the device.
hopefully a little knowledge that I give will be helpful for those of youwho are less familiar with or new to the world of computer networks,I would greatly appreciate all the feedback you give

Wireless NIC for Linux...?
Installed Fedora 4 on one of my computers. Everything is working fine, untill I wanted to buy a wireless NIC. I can't find a wireless NIC (PCI) that has linux drivers for it. Can anyone help me? Some links to some products would be helpful. Thanks
Unfortunaltly you have to go by the chips the manufacture used, I use prism54 on the laptop, the chip on a older netgear card. Linux driver know how to talk to chips, not realy how to talk to Linksys,Netgear,3Com ect. Find one you think you'd like and look up the chipset for it by model number. Or pick a chipset and try to find a card you'd like.
prism54.org
ipw2200.sourceforge.net
linux-wlan.org
madwifi.org
if all else fails or its a buildin card, ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net has a windows sorta emulator that runs windows network card drivers under linux, but why would you choose to have un-updateable drivers.
