These days the wireless networks are becoming more and more popular. Wireless home networks are very attractive to internet users as the simplicity of installation and practicality of being able to surf the net anywhere in the house. Some basic things about the wireless networks are to be known before attempting to start the arrange wireless home networks. You can read up more about the wireless networking protocols to help you get a improved understanding of wireless networking.
To set up a wireless home network you need to have broadband internet connection with a cable or DSL modem. The common set up at home is usually that of the desk top computer being plugged directly into the modem. In this tutorial we will consider that you have a laptop that you want to connect wirelessly to the PC that is connected to the internet. This can be made possible with some hardware.First you need to have a wireless router. For your laptop computer a PC card-based network adapter and for your desk top PC USB wireless network adapter must be added. For all the additional hardware you buy it is suggested to choose the same brand for obvious reasons. For the installation purpose refer to the documentation that comes with hardware.
When you already have all the necessary hardware installed, you can start the set up. Connect the wireless router to the modem after unplugging or turning off the DSL modem. For assistance you can refer the documentation that came with your hardware. When you've configured your computer will wirelessly connect to your router. Configuring wireless router is the next step. Your routers configuration page can be accessed using Internet Explorer.
Most of the default settings there are rather safe left alone but there are some things that you must configure. You need to select a unique wireless network name or SSID, this will be the name of your network. Be sure that no one around that is near you is using the same name. The next step is, if your router requires it, to give a unique passphrase that it will use to generate some keys. Then the last step to do before you are done with configuring the router is setting your administrative password. Choose a password that is not easy to guess and not too short for security reasons. Configured settings must be saved. These settings change according to the kind of router you have.
Configuring your laptops network adapter is the next step. It is simple to follow Window's XP's on-screen instructions for this one. Select “View Available Wireless Networks� in the pop up menu that appears by making the right-click on the wireless network in your task bar. The Wireless Network Connection window will show and there you will see the name you chose for your wireless network listed. If you dont see your network click refresh list in upper left corner. You will then be alerted to enter a key, this is the key that you wrote down in both the Network key and Confirm network key boxes. Click Connect. You will then see connection advacement as it connects to your network. Wireless network connection window can be closed when your connected. You're done, you've configured wireless connection.

What is difference between BG and ABG wireless network cards?
I have a dell latitude d610 laptop and its wireless network card is Intel (R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG network connection.
I want to fix Intel (R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG network wireless card, because I have heard it is more powerful for catching the wireless signal.

There are different types, or protocols, of WiFi.
There are a, b, g, and the most recent, n.
As for potential speed between your laptop to the router/wireless signal, n is the fastest, while a is the slowest. If cost is of no issue, why not get A/B/G for guaranteed compatibility over all routers you will encounter? If cost is of issue, and B/G is cheaper, get B/G as A is quite old and most routers support at least a B protocol by now.
