One well known disadvantage of a network switch is that it cannot communicate between networks. It is also not as effective as a router in limiting broadcasts. Fortunately, many of the drawbacks of network switches can be eliminated by using multilayered switches that are conveniently available in the market.

Do I need just a network switch?
Hey, I'm planning to have a LAN party with friends, basically we will all have a LAN connection (wired), but I will need to buy another device for this. As we will require no Internet access during it, just a network connection where all the computers are on the same network. Do I need a switch or a router?
From what I've read it looks like I need a switch, but I'd like to confirm it.
A switch will enable the connection. However, if all pcs are set to obtain their IP address automatically, you will need a DHCP server to provide this OR you will have to have all IP addresses set up as different static IP addresses on the same subnet. If you have a router already, connect the router to the switch and all pcs to the switch and let the router do DHCP for you.
