A wired Ethernet network using a switch shares bandwidth, is there anything like this for wireless networks?
Am I right in thinking that if you were to wire 4 computers up to a switch they wouldn't have to share the bandwidth between them? Is there anything like that for a wireless network or do they always have to share bandwidth between the networked devices?
the wired nodes on a switch would not have to share bandwidth unless they were communicating with something on common. If 1 and 2 were talking with 4 the total bandwidth is limited to 1Gb. But 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 could both run at 1Gb. So that part is correct.
But a wireless router operates like a hub. Everyone connected wirelessly shares the same bandwidth. If it was a combination g/N router then those networks are distinct because the g is running in the 2.4GHz range and the N is running in the 5GHz range. But all the devices connected using the N radio would be sharing that chunk of bandwidth.
So the main answer to your question is that all the wireless devices share the same bandwidth. Even worse is that they share that bandwidth with other nearby wireless APs using the same channel even if the APs are on completely different networks.
