Measuring Computer Memory RAM – An Overview

Computers have become an essential part of our lives today. It is very essential to understand the memory requirements as well, but before that you should know what makes for the computer memory. Memory is one of the main apparatus of the computer as it is responsible for temporary storage of a wide variety of information inclusive of numbers, dates, characters, files and folders, instructions and lot of other information. Computer memory is better known in terms of RAM also known as Random Access Memory.

As the name suggests, Random Access Memory offers information which can be accessed randomly at any time and in any manner. In technological words, RAM is a solid state memory which is attached to the processing unit of the computer through a memory bus. It is the Computer RAM which stores all the temporary information on the computer. It is the information stored in RAM which is used for opening and running applications as well software programs. However, it is important to understand that some RAM Chips are whimsical in nature. That is, since all the information is only temporarily stored in the RAM thus when the computer is switched off or restarted all the information which is stored gets deleted from the memory. Also when a program is closed after use the memory used by such program is also released for other in-use programs. It is based on these properties that RAM chips are considered volatile storage instruments. The Computer CPU is equipped to retrieve the data stored in the computer RAM at high speed.

How to Measure RAM:

Since everything is measured in some way or the other thus RAM speed is measured in megahertz (MHz) terms. Opening of various programs at one time also affects the speed of RAM by slowing it down. In such a case the computer uses the hard disk for temporarily storing the additional data. Therefore, a computer with large RAM is bound to offer better performance by doing more tasks at a faster pace. A minimum of 1GB RAM is highly recommended in the modern day computers. For a gaming person the advisable limit is atleast 2 GB RAM.

What is an easy way to free up memory (RAM) on my computer?

I have a 512 RAM sysytem, but on 12 MB available. Consequently I run slow, crash often, and have an urgent desire to throw said system out the window.

I want to know the easiest ways to free up memory. My biggest complaint is when I want to watch a downloaded video on iTunes, it 'stutters' or freezes.

I'm getting a new system, so I'm not adding memory to this. Uninstalling programs only helped marginally.

RamBooster is an amazing program that'll do wonders for machines like yours! I personally use it (even on 2 gigs of RAM). Try it out.

You have to tweak some of the settings to get it just right, though. Check out this video from CNETTV on how to set it up:
