Setup Cable Internet Connection On A Linksys Router
The majority of Cable ISPs (Internet Service Providers) use MAC (Media Access Control) Address authentication to establish Internet connection for their customers. A MAC address is a unique string identifying a network adapter. Therefore, if you have changed you router, then you need to register its MAC address with your ISP or setup your Linksys router to use the old MAC address.
You must activate the MAC Clone feature of your Linksys router in order register your router with your ISP using an MAC address. To do this, you need to check your Internet connection, connecting your modem to your Linksys router, verify your Linksys router's LEDs, and setup the necessary properties on you Linksys router to connect to the Internet.
To check your Internet connection, connect a computer directly to the broadband modem using an Ethernet cable and verify your Internet connectivity by opening Google web page for example. If you cannot go online, then contact your ISP support team in order to fix this issue.
If you Internet connection is working, then connect your modem to the Internet port on your Linksys router. In addition, connect your computer to any Ethernet port of your Linksys router. After doing this, verify that the Internet led, as well as the numbered led related to the Ethernet port where your computer is connected, is lit.
At this phase of the configuration process, you will see how to set up your Linksys router for cable Internet connection.
Step 1: Open your Linksys router's built-in web-based setup interface.
Step 2: Click the Setup tab, and click MAC Address Clone.
Step 3: Select Enabled, click Clone My PC's MAC, and then Click the Save Settings button.
To verify your configuration, you may click the Status tab and check your Linksys router's Internet IP Address. If the Internet IP Address is different from 0.0.0.0, then your Internet connection is configured correctly.

Yes you can do this. I am very against wireless for gaming consoles for 4 reasons: reliability, interference, security, and ease of setup.
Powerline I believe is the best compromise to an ethernet connection. Technically it is an Ethernet connection. It's Ethernet going through your wall outlets rather than going wireless. Powerline comes in 4 speeds: 14 Mbps, 85 Mpbs, 200 Mbps, and 1 Gbs. 85 Mbps is plenty fast for online gaming. 200 Mbps is great for streaming standard definition and 720p high definition from a device like your Tivo to your computer. 1 Gbps is great for streaming 1080p from one device on your network to your computer.
I use both wireless and powerline. Although my G MIMO wireless connection has less average latency, if I run enough pings to my router which is at 192.168.1.1, I will see 1-2 ms of delay, but it will spike up over 20 ms every once in a while. This spike up in delay on Xbox live is really bad. This can cost you a game or a point. Streaming online video is different because you can let it buffer by a 10 seconds so that when it does lag for that split second, you won't notice anything. However, when you are gaming, you don't get that 10 second buffer. You need the most consistent delay as possible, and powerline gives you that.

These devices really are as easy to setup as they say it is. It comes with a CD that you don't even need to run. The only reason why you would need the CD is if you add a third powerline device, and you want quality of service so that the Xbox gets priority over web surfing. If there is only one powerline connection, you would have to setup quality of service on the router anyway. Security is done by hitting holding a button in on each powerline device for 2 seconds, and doing so within 2 minutes of each other. The Xbox will think it's connected directly to the router.
Another benefit of powerline is if 5 years later you dump your Xbox, you can use the powerline products for a computer in a remote room from the router. The Xbox adapter can only be used for the Xbox.
