Adding Additional Phone Lines
In most residential phone wiring, the cable contains four individual wires. Most phone wire installed during the second half of the 20th century is this type of wiring:
The kind of wire shown above has recently become outdated. All new telephone wiring projects should now use CAT 5 type cable. This is a cable with 4 pairs of wire. Each set of wire is twisted together with complementing colors.
1st pair colors = WHITE with orange stripes - ORANGE with white stripes
2nd pair colors = WHITE with blue stripes - BLUE with white stripes
3rd pair colors = WHITE with green stripes - GREEN with white stripes
4th pair colors = WHITE with brown stripes - BROWN with white stripes
In either case, one phone line requires only two wires. If this is for one phone line only, the remaining wires are not used. Adding an additional phone circuit like a second phone number for a fax or additional phone line is as easy as connecting another pair of wires.
Above are shown attaching cabling to a surface mounted jack. A wall plate outlet will use the same wiring scheme.
Detail 1 has CAT5 (4 pairs of wires) cabling while Detail 2 is the older four wire connection. Up to two phone lines can be connected to the surface jack shown above. The remaining wires are not used. Wall plate outlets can have four or more outlets.
A line cable is the cord that connects you telephone to the phone jack on the wall. The main thing you need to know about line cords is that there are single phone line cables, and two line cables.
Take a look at the modular connector on the end of the cord. If there are only 2 gold pins, it is a single line phone. If there are four pins, it can be used for a single line or a two line phone.

"Clip" style line cords on old rotary phone?
I saw these output line cords coming from what looked to be a Western Bell 500. They were shaped like small clips? What type of cord is this? Can it be converted to a standard modern phone jack?
Early (1950's) Western or Northern Electric 500 type telephones typically came with a spade connection or four prong connector. Later models (late 1970's) came with an RJ11 type plug that is common today.
There are converters available to convert the 4 prong to RJ11. Try ebay.
