The internal combustion engine has an efficiency of 25 to 30%. A gallon of gasoline contains 125,000 BTU's and 1 HP equals 2,545 BTU's per hour, so if you know the horsepower of an engine and its fuel consumption per hour you can calculate its efficiency.
(HP)(2,545)/((125,000)(Gallons per hour)) = efficiency
