Auxiliary Fuel Tanks

Auxiliary Fuel Tanks are simply another tank that is fitted to give the vehicle more range. Many 4wd Vehicles come standard with an auxiliary tank which can be pumped into the main tank as it empties. Generally these tanks can only hold 30 – 60 Litres, but this still has a dramatic effect on the distance that you are travelling. This is especially the case if you are towing something, because you will use a lot more fuel. It's important to be aware of the location of the secondary tank. A lot of people put the secondary tank at the back of the vehicle, out of the way. This is good, or you can put them on the opposite side to the main tank.

It's important to consider the weight distribution of your vehicle; you don't want too much weight to be sitting on one side of the vehicle. The other thing to carefully look at is the clearance that the tank is going to offer. If there is any chance of the tank getting hit by rocks or scraped over the ground then it's well worth trying to modify it, or as a minimum fit some sort of guard. The last thing that you want to do is to put a hole in your fuel tank when you are miles away from the nearest town!

If you want to fit another LPG tank you really need to have a good location for it to go. In most cases, there simply isn't enough space to fit a second tank. These tanks are always cylindrical to allow for the pressure that LPG sits at, and as a result they take up a lot of time. To add to the problem, gas burns very quickly meaning that even with another tank your distance doesn't improve a huge amount. That being said, the biggest Long Range Fuel Tank you can buy for a normal four wheel drive would sit in the back of a big vehicle, like an F250 and would be around 180 litres.
