The Need For Speed: The Benefits Of Fibre Optic Broadband
Dial-up internet...now there's a blast from the past! Anyone born before the 1990s will probably remember all that time spent opening a web-browser and then going off to make a cup of tea until the page loaded. But in the very early days, people didn't mind all that much, because it was all they were used to.
Indeed, the very act of ‘going online' at home was a novelty in itself and it wasn't until people started getting used to faster connection speeds at school, work, university and in internet cafes that waiting 15 minutes for a graphics-heavy web page to load was deemed excessive.
Whilst nobody would ever dream of going back to those dawdling-days of yore, a report by the Office of National Statistics revealed that 10% of internet users still connected to the Web via ‘narrowband' in 2009. This figure has more than likely fallen somewhat by now, but given the proliferation of ADSL broadband across the majority of the UK for quite some years now, it seems that some people simply don't have a need for speed when surfing the World Wide Web.
However, for the vast majority of people, speeds of well in excess of 512kbps have been the norm for many years now with some broadband providers already offering speeds of over 10mbps as standard.
Traditional ADSL broadband uses a copper wire telephone line. This type of material causes data rates to drop quickly and considerably as the length of the wire increases, which means that the speed an internet user experiences varies significantly in accordance with how far away their house is from the telephone exchange. And that's where fibre optic broadband will really change the way people experience the internet.
Fibre broadband experiences comparatively little deterioration in data transmission signals and internet users won't suffer from slow speeds simply because of where they live.
Plans are currently underway to bring super-fast broadband to 40% of the UK by 2012, which should see speeds of in excess of 40mbps - many millions of people across the UK will benefit from super fast broadband. Home users will be able to download files faster and in greater volume.
Businesses in particular may reap the greatest benefit though. With higher speeds and greater capacity, companies will be far less likely to experience slow internet at certain times of the day and productivity is likely to increase too, especially in businesses that rely on fast data transfers between its various hubs.
Much in the same way as dial-up is viewed as a relic of days gone by, ADSL broadband could be consigned to the history books in the not too distant future too. And for many people, that day can't come soon enough.

Can somebody explain the difference between fibre optic installation and cable?
For me none. I move to a new built flat fitted with fibre optic. It seems I can receive between 10 and 50 Mb ts with only 1 provider (Seethelight.co.uk?). I am with Virgin. They tell me I am moving to a non cabled area and need a line with BT now and slower broadband when I tranfer. I tough that what they called cable is fibre optic???
I will move to new built area where all homes are fitted with the fastest broadband due to fibre optic but I can get it only with 1 company: Seelight. This company will provide phone +broadband. I don't know this company and can't find information about them. What I don't understand is why Virgin that use the same technology can't tranfer my service (phone+broadband) to this place. They want me to take a line with BT and use their national service for people who don't have fibre optic separately. Precision: my new flat postcode is not in their system.
An optical fiber (or fibre) is a glass or plastic fiber that carries light along its length. Fiber optics is the overlap of applied science and engineering concerned with the design and application of optical fibers. Optical fibers are widely used in fiber-optic communications, which permits transmission over longer distances and at higher bandwidths (data rates) than other forms of communications. Fibers are used instead of metal wires because signals travel along them with less loss, and they are also immune to electromagnetic interference. Fibers are also used for illumination, and are wrapped in bundles so they can be used to carry images, thus allowing viewing in tight spaces. Specially designed fibers are used for a variety of other applications, including sensors and fiber lasers.
Light is kept in the core of the optical fiber by total internal reflection. This causes the fiber to act as a waveguide. Fibers which support many propagation paths or transverse modes are called multi-mode fibers (MMF), while those which can only support a single mode are called single-mode fibers (SMF). Multi-mode fibers generally have a larger core diameter, and are used for short-distance communication links and for applications where high power must be transmitted. Single-mode fibers are used for most communication links longer than 550 metres (1,800 ft).
Joining lengths of optical fiber is more complex than joining electrical wire or cable. The ends of the fibers must be carefully cleaved, and then spliced together either mechanically or by fusing them together with an electric arc. Special connectors are used to make removable connections.
