What is the difference between Dual Channel and Triple Channel memory?
Does it have to do with DDR2 and DDR3? Isn't "channel" the slot where you insert the ram stick? so shouldn't dual channel mobo have only 2 memory slots and triple channel have 3?
And can all processors run both dual channel and triple or not
No. A channel can have any number of slots connected to it. If two slots are on the same channel, only one can be accessed at a time and the channel will have to select the appropriate slot. If two slots are on different channels, the memory controller can access both slots at the same time.
With the latest processors, each memory channel is directly connected to the CPU. So it will be the CPU itself that either has two memory channels or three. With older CPUs, the memory controller was on the motherboard, so the same CPU could be put in a motherboard with any number of channels on its memory controller.
