Step-By-Step PS3 Blu-Ray Repair Guide - How To Fix Your PS3 Blu-Ray Drive

Is your PS3's Blu-Ray drive not working? Are you having difficulties with your PS3 not reading disks and want to learn how to fix it? In this article you are going to learn how to fix your PS3 Blu-Ray laser lens, which is the most common problem with PS3 disc drives. Keep reading to learn step-by-step the basics of PS3 Blu-Ray repair.

In order to fix your PS3 Blu-Ray laser lens you will need the following tools and items:

• Cross-headed "mini" screwdriver set (pop the top cover off your PS3 and see if you have any screwdrivers which are the right size. If not, these screwdriver sets are not very expensive)
• A replacement Blu-Ray lens - these can be salvaged from other PS3 Blu-Ray drives, or you can purchase online (from eBay) the part number #kem-400aaa

Here is the step-by-step method of PS3 Blu-Ray repair

1. Take the top cover of the casing off from your PS3, along with the power cord for the Blu-Ray drive itself (this will have a rectangular, opaque/white plastic end which goes into the drive)

2. Remove the Blu-Ray drive from its position and carefully unclip the silver data ribbon from the drive. It has a blue colored ending to help you locate it

3. Remove the two silver screws from right-hand side of the drive casing, and then the three black screws on the left-hand side of the drive. Ensure that you do not lose any of these screws in the process!

4. Gently remove the metal casing of the Blu-Ray drive, exposing the secondary lens casing underneath it.

5. Remove the screws on the black colored plate which covers the lens itself. Lift this plate off too.

6. Unscrew and put to one side the Blu-Ray lens screws (these will be fairly easy to see), then remove the actual lens unit itself.

7. Put your new lens in carefully, trying not to fumble with it too much to avoid damage, and then ensure it is seated correctly, then put everything back together again.

My little sister cut the soft gold ribbon on bottom of my cd-drive that runs into the computer. What is it?

Can I replace it?

I don't think its a ground strap. If the ribbon looks like it has a lot of wires running through it, and connects to part of the cd-drive, then that could be bad. A computer or anything that reads discs uses a laser to read the disc. In most cases, the laser mechanism has to move back and forth across the disc to reach every part of the disc, since a laser is very thin. If the gold ribbon has wires running through it, then that means that the ribbon is what transmits information the laser reads off the disc into the computer. The ribbon is connected to the laser mechanism in order to do this. If the ribbon is severed, then no information is transmitted, meaning that the cd-drive wouldn't work. Check if the cd-drive is still working by inserting a disc into the computer and going to "My Computer" to see if the disc can be read. If not, then the cd-drive is broken. I wouldn't suggest replacing the ribbon by yourself, since you would have to be very precise in connecting every wire in the ribbon to its severed end. You should call someone to help fix it. If the cd-drive is still working, then the ribbon may be a ground strap, and there's no real harm done.
