The PCMCIA card – evolution with no end
The PCMIA card, though in many types, are usually equal in size. Their width is 54 mm and the length is 85.6 mm. The Type I card is integrated with 16-bit interface and its thickness is about 3.3mm. The connecting interface of the card has 34 holes. The Type I PCMIA cards are used as memory providers for RAM, OTP, SRAM and OTP devices.
The Type II PCMCIA card is connected to 34 socket interfaces of two rows. In 1993, the 2.1 PCMCIA card was produced which can be used to attach PCs with many peripheral devices. The PCMCIQA card comprises with a connector of 68 pins to connect with PCs. This type of cards has 16 or 32 bits interfaces and the thickness of them is 5.0 mm. They are the first to have I/O compatibility. Due to this feature, PCs that have no built-in interfaces can be attached with many peripherals with Type II cards. Most Type II cards are extremely thin and have tiny connectors. They have to be connected with a dongle or a short wire, which in turn is connected to a bigger connector externally. Some Type II PCMCIA cards comprise with a retractable jack to insert a wire from the top.
Another type that's available with PCMCIA card is called type III cards. They are available with 16-bit or 32-bit features. Their thickness is 10.5 mm. The devices that cannot be fixed with Type I and type II cards are connectable with the Type III cards. This type cards do not require dongles to connect with PCs. Other than the standard three types, there are Type IV, Compact Flash PC card, Card Buses, and Card Bays.
The5.0 PCMCIA Card or Card Bus was introduced in 1995. They were fixed to PCs and laptops after 1996. The device has 32 bit. They support bus mastering that lets the users to talk with other devices and they do not have to go through the CPU to talk with others. The earlier devices, which are in 16-bit, cannot be connected with the PCMCIA Card Bus since they are in 32 bits. Most modern new slots are compatible with both 16 bit as well as 32 bits slots.
