Is it possible to make your own boot cover for figure skates? What materials do I need?

I just bought a second hand figure skates and I want to maximize their lifetime by putting a boot cover. But they are expensive! I'm already low on budget. Please do help me. Thank you.

Okay, first up I just want to say quickly that while the boot covers do offer some protection, they're not the be all and end all - they're not waterproof, and if you hit them with a blade they will tear. I recommend Sk8tape as well - it's pretty cheap really if you're in the US.

But, to answer your question, YES, it is absolutely possible! In fact, my grandma and I made me a pair for my second-hand skates!

The first step is to borrow a pair from someone who owns them. Get a manila folder or folded piece of A3 cardboard, turn the boot cover inside out, lay the heel edge of the boot cover on the folded edge of the cardboard, pin it down, and trace. Voila! Add about 5mm around the outside, and then cut out. You should end up with (unfolded) something resembling a whale tail.

Next, go to your local sewing store. This is the FUN part! You'll need some Lycra or stretch velvet, or any other type of stretch fabric you like. You can choose it in any colour or pattern that you like. Mine are a beautiful emerald green. Another girl at my rink wears neon green, and another wears sparkle pink. You can even get the sparkly type! If you want to make a pair for testing or competition, you can also get black or white. You'll need about 50cm max. I bought a metre and ended up with enough material to make a matching dress! (Which I haven't attempted yet, btw.) You will also need some elastic (3mm or 5mm flat is a good idea). I also got a bit of Velcro strap to put under my boot, but this is up to you. If you do get Velcro, you only need about 10cms, but make it the wider stuff.

Now it's time to cut out the fabric. Lay out your material on the table. You may need someone to help you hold it, because obviously it stretches. Take the flat edge of your pattern - the top straight part - and lay it along the edge of the fabric, then pin it down. Cut around the pattern, and repeat.

Then fold over the piece of fabric so you've got half a whale tail, and sew the curved edge together, about 5mm in from the edge. You can use a machine or hand. Measure out the elastic and place it around the top and bottom of the cover. Fold the 5mm hem over the elastic and sew down. Turn it right way out and voila! BOOT COVER! =DDDD
