Is it possible to replace my Intel Celeron processor with a Pentium 4 on my Compaq Presario SR1103WM?
I have an older Compaq Presario SR1103WM with an Intel Celeron(P) 325 2.53 GHz processor. I was hoping within the next few months to replace it with a Pentium 4 processor, but I'm not sure how. What is the difference between the two? If it is possible, how do I get one, how much is it, and how do I install it? If anyone could answer any of these questions, it would be greatly appreciated.
Socket 478 for Intel P4 Williamette and Northwood processors is what your system can handle. It stated at the Compaq site that it can handle 1.4GHZ to 2.8GHz or higher. Finding a 478 socket P4 may prove tricky, but they are still sold at some places.
Once you have a new one you may want to consider getting a new CPU fan, but its not entirely necessary. You need to unseat the CPU cooling fan, then lift the little lever to the side of the CPU socket to release it. Lift the old one out and place the new one in correctly. There should be a corner that appears odd in the pin set on the bottom of the processor and in the socket. This is how you determine how it fits in. Once it is in place put the lever back down to its original position to lock it in. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO FORCE THIS.
HANDLE THE CHIP WITH CARE or you may fry it. I suggest you review on line resources for changing processors b4 you delve into this project.
You should also use some heat sync gel between the processor and the fan. When applying this stuff place it off center of the chip away for the hole on top of the processor. You should only use a dab the size of a grain of rice, or else it will be to much and cause the processor to prematurely die.
