USB - COM ports and Baud rate incompatabilities?

We have a device at work that uses a COM port for its communications, we are using the device in conjunction with a modern laptop that does not have a COM port. Using a Belkin COM - USB adaptor we have connected the device to the laptops USB port, however communication cannot not be established between the two devices. I have been told that it is something to do with the Baud rate being different on the device to that of the laptop. I know you can change the Baud rate of a COM port but am unaware of how to do this on a USB port - I didn't think USB ports had a Baud rate. Can anyone help ?

It depends on what the device is, and how it interacts as a serial device. For example a modem is a DCE device (Data Communications Equipment), but a PC's COM port is DTE (Data Terminal Equipment). If the device is DTE, then you need a DTE > DTE cable (NULL MODEM). Maplin's sell these for about £5.

Have you ensured that you have selected the correct COM port on the software ? If it's quite old, it may not be able to select COM port numbers above 4. Typically USB > RS232C adapters use quite high port numbers. Also, you would select the Baud Rate inside the software...or on the port itself.

NOTE - If the software is old, it may not be able to communicate correctly with the COM port. Windows Me and earlier dealt with hardware interaction differently than later OS's (2K etc).

In Windows XP, you would do the following :-

Right mouse click on My Computer, and click on Properties.
Click on Hardware > Device Manager.
Expand Ports (COM & LPT).
Highlight the USB COM port, and click on Properties.
Click on Port Settings.
Change the Speed (Baud Rate) as needed.
Click OK when done.

NOTE - You may need to change the data parameters, for example Data Bits or Stop Bits. Typically most equipment uses 8 Data Bits, No Stop Bits and 1 Parity Bit, hence 8N1.
