The food channel takes food from the stomach to the lower (distal) part of the small intestine. The biliopancreatic channel joins the food channel, forming a common channel approximately 50-75 cm from the ileocecal valve leading to the colon (large intestine). This Duodenal switch surgery procedure may be modified to suit the individual requirements of the patient. For example, super-obese patients who need to lose more weight may be given an even shorter common channel to further reduce calorie absorption in the gastrointestinal tract.
