If you have a CCNA....?
and are studying to get the CCVP, have experience on an IT helpdesk dealing with desktop issues, phone issues, network issues, email etc. is it best to specialise in CCVP, CCIE, Avaya etc or get more qualifications in other areas i.e. server?
The CCIE will get you a job almost anywhere in the networking industry. The downside is that it's a hard certification to earn.
As I stated in my answer to your previous question, your best bet is to stay as general as you can in the beginning. Learn as much of the fundamentals of networking as you can absorb, and when you think you're beginning to get a real handle on the concepts, then think about specializing in VoIP or voice switching.
It's best to be a well rounded engineer even if you do specialize. That includes understanding the fundamentals of all aspects, including different types of circuits, IP subnetting, routing protocols, differences in high end routing and switching equipment, and server administration (Windows, linux, Solaris, etc.). Don't avoid any of them if you have the opportunity to learn. If, however, you have to pay for training or if your time is limited, I would recommend centering on the router/switch/IP technology for now.
