Switching to Digital Cable – Consider this!
TV viewers couldn’t have it better! The quality and variety of programming available to consumers today has multiplied like never before as compared to earlier. While the countries in the third world, like India, have been slow in responding to the revolution, yet they have picked up in a very strong way.
Despite the rapid advancements in the technology and choices available, a vast majority of the TV watching population is still glued to the good old cable TV that is conventionally delivered to their homes. If you are into the other market-savvy segment that wants to experience the latest and wish to take the next step in TV viewing, consider some important points before you make the switch.
Signal Quality:
In terms of quality of signal, DTH does score a bit over digital cable TV. The primary reason is that in case of the latter, you still depend on the old and outdated terrestrial cable network set up by the local vendor. The quality of signal does get compromised at this level. On the other hand, in case of DTH/Satellite TV, the signal is nearly perfect as it reached your home directly from Satellite. And the further loss through copper wire transmission is negligible, if any. The situation is however different in cases where digital TV cable companies have setup extensive fibre-optic networks that reach direct to home.
Cost Factor:
Due to the additional cost of the satellite receiver dish that is required in case of DTH, the option is costlier as compared to digital cable. On the other hand, a set-top box is almost the only extra device that is required while shifting from analogue TV to cable. However this difference in cost can soon get offset if you consider that you would be using this equipment for a fairly long time, and installation cost is a one-time affair.
Effect of Weather:
Despite the fact that DTH is a fairly robust technology designed to offer consistent quality at all times, it does suffer from some disturbance in case of rains and sandstorms. On the other hand, digital cable is immune from such external disturbances and can thus offer more consistency in terms of quality.

When you set up a cable modem does it have to be connected to the first connection into the house?
I am setting up a new cable modem. I set up it up in the basement. This is the 3rd leg of a cable split from upstairs to the first floor to the basement...
Before I set up the cable modem everything worked fine. When I set up the cable modem by splitting it again with the connection downstairs the modem worked perfectly but the tv signal was noticably weaker.
Is this a normal problem? Do I need to connect the modem to the first connection into the house to solve this? Anybody have any experiences.
Please dont say to call the cable company that is obvious. I am going to call them later tonight but in the meantime I would like to hear real people's experiences. Thanks
Every split decreases the signal strength so first make sure the splitter is the appropriate type (900MHz, 1GHZ or 2GHz- ask cable co.). If you are using the right splitters then use an amplifier to increase signal strength. (you can also have the cable co. increase your signal strenght but they have to do it at the box outside where the main hub terminates).
