Do I need cable to watch free tv on my Samsung S4253 HDTV?
I just purchased the S4253 (my 1st tv in YEARS, so excuse my lack of modern tech knowledge). I live in a multi unit building in Hyde Park Chicago, we are not allowed to get satelitte tv and Comcast is the only option (that I know of). I am trying to avoid paying a high amount for cable.
Can someone give me options or information how to fully utilize my tv that has both tuners? I have been reading that I need an antenna to view free channels but I did a "search" via "air" on my tv and it didn't find anything. Is this accurate or is there a possiblity I did something wrong?
I read in another Yahoo! Answer posting, that someone used a small antenna to pick up local channels and it was okay with the FCC as long as it is 1 M X 1 M, is this true? And where is the source so I can provide to my building mgmt?
Any additional help would be TRULY appreciated! I have found a lot of sites with TONS of info but its so much I dont know whats true and really benefical for me.
THANKS!
There are channels that are broadcast for free, ABC, CBS, NBC ect. but in order to really utilize your new t.v. you really should consider cable. The problem with air waves is that your t.v. has an aspect ratio of 16:9 or in other terms, your screen is 1.77 times longer than it is tall. A normal screen is 4:3 or 1.33 times. That means that a regular tv signal is going to look streched on your new one. Also the number of pixels, or dots of light, that make up your picture is much higher on your new t.v. What this means is that each dot that is broadcast into your new tv is going to be multiple dots on your screen as opposed to a single dot on a regular screen. With cable(or sat. but I guess thats out of the question) you have the option of getting HD channels which are broadcast in high resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio. That means your T.V. will look crystal clear.
You can pick up a standard T.V. antenea that will attach to the cable jack on the back of the T.V. in any electronics dept. at pretty much any store, but in your position it may be smart to spring for cable. The reason you prolly didn't find any channels via air is because your cable jack isn't a very sensitive reciever. Also if you have a dvd player your dvds will look very sharp on your tv. I would definately buy Component cables to hook dvd to the tv. The guys and gals at Best Buy or Circuit City or whatever you prefer could help you with that.
