Satellite Internet Vs. Mobile Broadband Cards
If you live or work in an area where high-speed internet, such as DSL or cable broadband, isn’t available, you don’t have many options when it comes to your connection. In fact, for quite a long time, your only option was to endure the excruciatingly slow speeds of a dial-up connection. Luckily, you no longer have to suffer. Two more options are available for those in high-speed deprived areas. You can use a mobile broadband card provided by a cellular phone company or you can have satellite broadband internet installed.
Mobile broadband cards are offered by Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and others. These wireless companies offer you a small, light device – the card – that you plug into your laptop’s USB port. It allows you to use the internet wherever you can receive the company’s cellular signal. Mobile broadband cards are very easy to use and require practically no installation. Expect to pay anywhere from 30 to 60 dollars monthly and to sign a contract of up to two years. Most companies provide a 3G connection, which offers speeds of anywhere from three times that of dial-up to almost broadband – varying heavily depending on the strength of the signal.
Given that these cards were designed for people to be able to use their laptop on the go, they might not be the best option for someone’s home connection. Since they utilize a wireless network, there is always the chance of running into a dead spot. Thus, there lies the possibility that you may not even receive a good signal in your home. Take into consideration that if you live in a rural or remote area that does not have high-speed internet access, there is a good chance that your area may not be covered too well by wireless networks either.

Your satellite broadband connection should remain constant most of the time. Although, you do have to worry about heavy rain or snow, which could cause signal interruption similar to that of satellite TV. Another advantage is that satellite is usually cheaper. Monthly fees run from around 25 to 50 dollars.
Your decision on which connection to have installed should be carefully thought out. Both services will more than likely require you to sign a contract. So, be sure to ask around to friends and family who may have used either service. Keep in mind that if you are going with a mobile card, you want to verify that you will receive a good signal in your home. Whether you choose satellite internet or a cellular company’s mobile card, you will be glad that you no longer have to waste your time on that dial-up connection.

Is a 3G Wireless Broadband Card compatible with an Xbox 360 and Xbox Live?
I have Hughes Net Internet right now, but the connection isn't great for Xbox Live. I was wondering if I can get a Verizon, AT&T, Cricket, etc. Broadband Card and plug it into my Xbox 360 for online play. If you know of one that will work, please post a link to the website. Thanks!
Nope, because the device needs to have drivers for the USB modem that you want to use. And, to my knowledge, there are no drivers made for an XBOX.
You can connect your XBOX to a PC, install the USB broadband modem, and then enable internet connection sharing to allow the XBOX to access the internet connection. Standard windows networking...should work fine.
OR...you could buy a modem/router that is compatible with the USB modem and run your network that way. Cradlepoint makes great routers. And they take regular physical ethernet WAN connections as well so if you switch to DSL or Cable, it will work.
So... USB Broadband Modem, plug into Cradlepoint Router, plug XBOX into cradlepoint either using ethernet direct connect or wifi.
By the way, the performance will be lousy on a 3G card. If you can get a Sprint (or Clear) WiMX/4G card AND you live in a WiMax area, that will work great. Don't get caught up in the Verizon 4G hype. AT&T 3G network technology is actually faster than the first release of Verizon's 4G LTE technology. Future upgrades will make it faster, but right now, AT&T 3G beats Verizon 4G LTE.
