The advantages of blue tooth are that it is automatic, inexpensive and wireless. Blue tooth helps to find solutions to problems that come with infrared systems. Infrared communications are fairly reliable and inexpensive to build into a device. The older Bluetooth 1.0 standard has a maximum transfer speed of 1 megabit per second (Mbps), while Bluetooth 2.0 can manage up to 3 Mbps. Bluetooth 2.0 is backward-compatible with 1.0 devices.
Though fairly reliable and cheap, infrared communications have their drawbacks. Since infrared is almost always a “one to one” technology, you can send data between your PC and laptop, but not from laptop and PDA at the same time. Secondly, infrared is a “line of sight” technology, for example you have to point the remote control at TV set to achieve you intention.
The two drawbacks, however, are beneficial in some way. As infrared transmitters and receivers have to be lined up with each other, interference between devices is highly uncommon. The one-to-one nature of infrared communications is very useful; as you can make sure a message goes only to the appropriate recipient, even in place full of infrared receivers.
Bluetooth networking transits data through low radio waves. It communicates on frequency of 2.45 gigahertz. Blue tooth uses a radio technology called frequency-hopping spread spectrum, which chops the data being sent and transmits chunks of it on up to 79 frequencies.
Bluetooth is a standard and communications protocol primarily designed for low power consumption, with a short range based on low-cost transceiver microchips in each device. Because the devices use a radio (broadcast) communications system, they do not have to be in line of sight of each other. Blue tooth can connect several devices, thereby overcoming problems of synchronization.
