I'm planning on joining up soon, and I was just curious about the rules with phone and email use while in basic.

The army is not less strict than other branches as someone else below said. During Basic training you will get no internet access and a couple of 5 minute calls calls during your 9 weeks (10 with reception) once you go to AIT then it all depends on your job, your AIT length, and your instructors. For example many combat arms branches such as infantry, combat engineer, field artillary are OSUT, one station unit training, which means that basic and AIT are combined together, OSUT training is shorter and you will have very little opportunity to call home and almost no internet access. Other jobs such as 35 series jobs, military intelligence, have very long AIT's so access to internet and phone are granted.
